Pizza Hut employees, too, were eager to play their part in helping victims.\n\nShayda Habib, a Pizza Hut employee in Sugar Land, Texas, went into work on Tuesday and heard the news that there were families who, while physically safe, were running out of food as they waited for rescue from the storm. \"When I heard there were families in need, I knew we needed to act fast...I called my husband and asked him to gather up kayaks and meet me at the restaurant,\" [Habib told *Click 2 Houston*.](https://www.click2houston.com/news/houston-flood/pizza-by-kayak-sugar-land-pizza-hut-delivers-in-floodwaters) Wading through water with a kayak full of pizzas, the couple spent the day delivering to those in need.\n\nCheck out *Chron.com* for [incredible pictures of these hometown heroes delivering pizzas in the Village of Oak Lake neighborhood](http://www.chron.com/news/houston-weather/hurricaneharvey/article/Sugar-Land-Pizza-Hut-workers-deliver-food-to-12162025.php#photo-14021877). Shayda [said](http://www.chron.com/news/houston-weather/hurricaneharvey/article/Sugar-Land-Pizza-Hut-workers-deliver-food-to-12162025.php#photo-14021865) they were able to deliver 120 pizzas that first day and will continue to help until they run out of food. The container says \"delivered hot,\" but maybe The Hut should consider adding, \"and dry!\"\n\nThe official Pizza Hut Twitter account tweeted its thanks to these brave employees, and the responses are full of people applauding their meaningful efforts. Here's hoping other local businesses find safe and effective ways to help Texans affected by the storm (um, unlike those exploiting and profiting from the storm by [price gouging necessary items like bottled water](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/28/price-gouging-during-hurricane-harvey-up-to-99-for-a-case-of-water-texas-ag-says.html).\n\nIf you're looking to help people and communities affected by Hurricane Harvey, check out [this guide](http://www.teenvogue.com/story/hurricane-harvey-how-to-help) full of ways to donate money, give blood, volunteer your time, and even take in an animal.\n\n\n[#twitter: https://twitter.com/pizzahut/status/902991132606550021]\n\n\n[#twitter: https://twitter.com/Crazy456Rhino/status/903026249928515586]\n\n__Related:__ [Pizza Hut Is Now Making MAC 'N' CHEESE Pizza](http://www.teenvogue.com/story/pizza-hut-macaroni-and-cheese-pizza)\n\n\n[#cneembed: script/video/59a465ad737bfd246400000e.js?muted=1]||||||",

Do we get on the street with a car? [There’s] a lot happening. I’ve seen the resilience of the people of Houston; my only concern would be trying to go back to how things were too quickly. It's been four days, and I haven't seen them yet but know they are OK and with my brother, and that's more than I can ask for. My family has survived hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike in the time we've lived in Katy, but none of those category fives have been this bad. By some miracle, the water didn't reach inside my parents' or my grandparents' houses, but it got very close. Luckily, my family is safe and the water in our neighborhood is slowly draining. We didn't run out of medicine for our older diabetic dog, and neither [dog] was afraid during the storm. My parents and grandparents lost a lot of sleep waiting for an evacuation notice and watching the water steadily creep up to the back porch, but the danger has passed. I'm currently in Austin. I arrived a few hours before the storm hit. Right now, I'm mostly worried about my friends' parents whose houses were flooded. Where will they go? Will they keep the same houses? Move? Not many people in Katy had flood insurance because their homes were in zones with extremely low likelihood of flooding. Can they even afford to rebuild? Watching the footage of the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey from Austin, Texas, is indescribable. Helpless is the first and last thought that comes to mind. There is a constant cycle of helplessness, fear, and survivor's guilt. College students are back in class now. As a student, I am torn in two. On one hand, I want to drop everything on my plate right now to run home and join the disaster relief, to help my parents and our friends. On the other hand, my parents are the reason I’m in school; to disregard my education would be of utmost disrespect to them and everything they’ve provided me with. Through the widespread destruction and rollercoaster of emotions experienced by a Houstonian looking from the outside in, I have immense pride in my hometown. When disaster strikes, a city has two choices: rise together, or individually fall. Houston has risen together like I’ve never seen before. I feel proud that I am connected to a community that, when worst comes to worst, loves, respects, supports, and uplifts. As soon as we got home, we pulled out two kayaks and took them to the Main Street because we saw a lot of kids, animals, and old people who needed help. in Texas have been severely affected by [Hurricane Harvey](http://www.teenvogue.com/search?q=hurricane%20harvey), leading to unprecedented levels of flooding, [devastating destruction](http://www.teenvogue.com/story/hurricane-harvey-how-to-help), and [at least 30 lives lost](http://www.teenvogue.com/story/hurricane-harvey-approaches-texas). Weather experts are calling it the [most extreme rain event](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/08/29/harvey-marks-the-most-extreme-rain-event-in-u-s-history/) in U.S. history — and it will likely take years and billions of dollars to fully restore the area. \n\nBelow, seven young people with ties to Houston share what it's been like dealing with Hurricane Harvey. Some had to walk through the flooding to evacuate, while others are away from home and trying to check in with loved ones who are braving the storm.\n\n#\"Please don't think that everything is fine after the media stops focusing on Harvey.\"\n\n\"Being at Rice University, we're sheltered from any major damage Harvey has inflicted, but my roommate and so many others I know have family and friends suffering. I'm originally from Louisiana, and I lived 30 minutes away from the serious damage left behind by Hurricane Katrina. The atmosphere and feeling of restlessness are the exact same. We want to do something to help, but we feel like nothing we do makes an impact. Hurricane [Harvey's] affected areas may seem like they're recovering, because you eventually hear less and less about [them], but that doesn't erase all the damage its done. Please don't think that everything is fine after the media stops focusing on Harvey. The leftover damage will still exist and will not be alleviated unless people are willing to go out and volunteer their help. After Hurricane Katrina, after the media left, all relief efforts lost their momentum and people thought New Orleans and Louisiana were fine. The fact is, efforts to restore everything continued on and are still happening today, 12 years later. Make sure Houston stays relevant.\" — *Shannon C.*\n\n#\"A lot of people literally lost everything.\"\n\n\"[I’m in] a newer neighborhood, so the [retention] ponds are really, really deep. For the past three days, it's just been rising and rising, and yesterday, it began spilling in the street, and it didn’t get too close to the house, but it just started skimming the driveway. We were much luckier than people in the neighborhood; a lot of people literally lost everything. I want to help and I want to volunteer, but I have to ask, is it safe to leave the house? Do we get on the street with a car? [There’s] a lot happening. I’ve seen the resilience of the people of Houston; my only concern would be trying to go back to how things were too quickly. Obviously there’s a lot of business and a lot of money to be made [here], so that would probably be my worry: Getting back on the horse too quickly and not taking care of the people who need to be taken care of.\" — *Ahmed B.*\n\n#\"My mom and dad called me saying the water wouldn't stop rising.\"\n\n\"Me and my sister were lucky, we just happened to visit my cousins on the north side past downtown when the flooding started. My mom and dad called me saying the water wouldn't stop rising [at home], and I felt horrible for not being there. After a while, she stopped answering and I felt so guilty. A few hours later after not knowing if my parents were alive, I got a call saying the water was to their chests and they walked a few miles to a hotel with nothing but the clothes on their back. It's been four days, and I haven't seen them yet but know they are OK and with my brother, and that's more than I can ask for. I didn't have to save anyone because the flooding didn't hit that hard on the north side; I've been blessed enough to just need comfort at the moment.\" — *Raul C.*\n\n#\"Not many people in Katy had flood insurance.\"\n\n\"I'm currently a student at University of Texas at Austin, but the town I've lived in all my life is Katy, a suburb of Houston. My family and many others are still trapped in houses, experiencing flooding, or being evacuated. What if they had a mortgage, do they still need to pay it? I don't know the answers to any of these questions right now, and I know that a lot of people are losing sleep over losing their homes right now.\" — *Elizabeth R.*\n\n#\"There is a constant cycle of helplessness, fear, and survivor's guilt.\"\n\n\"Houston is my home. Yes, the physical house that I grew up in is located in Houston, but it’s more than that. My family lives in Houston. My friends live in Houston. I was raised in a large but tightly-knit community in the same church where my parents are members, and their parents were members. My roots run deep in the Houston community. Because of the generosity and determination of neighbors helping neighbors, countless lives have been saved. I only pray that the unity remains and that people don’t slip back into snap judgements and political unrest. It’s only a matter of time.\" — *Emily C.*\n\n#\"I went to sleep not knowing if my parents were home or even alive.\"\n\n\"The night it started to pour down I wasn't home with my parents, I was at my friend Jacob's house with the rest of my friends. I received a message from my mom saying water got inside the house. At this point, I was panicking knowing there was no way home. I went to sleep not knowing if my parents were home or even alive. I was desperate just to get a glimpse of my house. [The] next day, me and two other guys hopped in the truck with my friend and tried to get as close to [his] house as we could. We got two miles away and walked home with water up to our [chests]. As soon as we got home, we pulled out two kayaks and took them to the Main Street because we saw a lot of kids, animals, and old people who needed help. I was trying to call my dad all day because I was worried about my house more than anything, and once he answered, he said, 'Don't go home,' and before I can ask why he [said], 'You'll be going home to nothing.' Once I heard that, I didn't know what to do but cry. All [of] my things were gone. I was in disbelief. I was literally asking everyone I walked by if they seen how flooded [my street] was and they all told me the same [thing], but I didn't want to believe them. It was truly heartbreaking to see my home flooded. I tried getting all I could of house, like my [dad's] medicine and clothes for my nephews, and as I was walking out, I [saw] my parents and I started crying out of happiness. I think people in Houston need hope and each other and reassurance that this is all going to get better sooner or later. Having to start all over worries me the most. Having to get new cars, to repair my house...it's going to take months for my life to be normal again, and that scares me the most. I'm not worried about my clothes or anything. I'm giving that to people who lost everything and can't afford a thing.\" — *Kevin C.*\n\n#\"We don’t know what’s going to happen to our house.\"\n\n\"I’m originally from Katy, [Texas] which is just outside of Houston, just west of Houston. I lived there most of my life, and I moved to College Station a week or so ago [for college]. I was trying to stay in touch with my family [over the weekend]; they were all hiding in a downstairs closet [during tornado warnings]. I kept calling to check in on them, but it wasn’t terrible. But at one point, [the hurricane] was only moving about two miles an hour, and it stalled over Houston and over Katy and my house, so in between tornado warnings, my family was actually trying to move furniture upstairs because of the floods. We actually have a bayou behind our house, so the expectation was that it’d flood [the area] and flood our house, and that’s what it ended up doing. It’s just been really hard being away from my family and not getting to go through everything they’ve gone through, not because I wanted to, but because it’s so hard not being with them. Having to hear about it through the phone is not the same thing. My family was evacuated from our house on Monday by boat. Our road is completely flooded; the water is in our house. It’s just hard because we don’t know what’s going to happen to our house. A house is expensive to fix, and college is expensive to pay for, so there [are] a lot of monetary concerns with that. With my family, there’s the worry that financially it’s going to be really hard. But also it’s sad because they’ve been through an experience that I can’t understand and I won’t ever be able to understand. That’s something they have in common that I just don’t get. It’s concerning because how can I help them through this time when I don’t get it?\" — *Madi T.*\n\n__Related:__ [How to Help the Victims of Hurricane Harvey](http://www.teenvogue.com/story/hurricane-harvey-how-to-help)\n\n__Check this out:__\n\n[#cneembed: script/video/59a493d6148bb04f7800000e.js?muted=1]||||||","channel":"News and Politics","subChannel":"","meta":{"collectionName":"articles","modelName":"article","publishable":true,"identifiable":true,"image":false,"archived":false,"hallable":true,"hierarchical":false},"revisionAuthor":"Shireen Mohyi","issueDate":"","hed":"How Hurricane Harvey Affected 7 Young People ","_embedded":{"photosTout":[{"fields":{"aspectRatios":{"master":{"width":3000,"height":1977,"format":"JPEG","duration":{},"url":"https://cn-copilot-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/teenvogue-services/production/2017/08/31/59a80f0ebabf8161f9aa82f9_GettyImages-841052310.jpg"},"5:2":{"override":false,"height":1200,"width":3000,"modifications":{"crop":{"height":1200,"width":3000,"x":0,"y":0}},"duration":{}},"3:2":{"override":false,"height":1976,"width":2964,"modifications":{"crop":{"height":1976,"width":2964,"x":18,"y":0}},"duration":{}},"2:3":{"override":false,"height":1977,"width":1318,"modifications":{"crop":{"height":1977,"width":1318,"x":841,"y":0}},"duration":{}},"16:9":{"override":false,"height":1683,"width":2992,"modifications":{"crop":{"height":1683,"width":2992,"x":4,"y":0}},"duration":{}},"4:3":{"override":false,"height":1977,"width":2636,"modifications":{"crop":{"height":1977,"width":2636,"x":182,"y":0}},"duration":{}},"1:1":{"override":false,"height":1977,"width":1977,"modifications":{"crop":{"height":1977,"width":1977,"x":511.5,"y":0}},"duration":{}}},"revisionCreatedAt":"Aug 31, 2017 9:28AM EDT","meta":{"collectionName":"photos","modelName":"photo","publishable":false,"identifiable":false,"image":true,"archived":false,"hallable":false,"hierarchical":false},"revisionAuthor":"Alli Maloney","caption":"HOUSTON, TX - AUGUST 30: Flooding continues to be shown near downtown Houston following Hurricane Harvey August 29, 2017 in Houston, Texas.
