				<p>
	The flooding, the fast-moving rivers, the rescues, the destruction&mdash;the images from Hurricane Harvey have been unbelievable. The ability to live-stream from the palm of our hand and to post to social media in real time have changed the way news outlets report current conditions and how first responders react.
</p>
<p>
	There have been some interesting ways technology has been used during what is being called one of the worst tropical events to ever hit the United States. <a href="http://www.heraldtimesonline.com/deseret/life/help-victims-of-hurricane-harvey-by-using-social-media-and/article_73a53a0f-b1bf-514c-942c-4aeda93bd6bb.html" target="_blank">Twitter users implemented the hashtag #HarveySOS</a> to let others know they were in a dire situation and needed immediate help. Neighbors and first responders have stepped up to the task.
</p>
<p>
	Facebook activated its safety-check feature so users could alert friends and family that they were OK. <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/28/snapchat-snap-maps-hurricane-harvey/" target="_blank">Snapchat users utilized the new Snap Maps feature</a> as a means of locating friends and family as well as checking conditions in certain areas around Houston.
</p>
<p>
	Several tech companies&mdash;such as Apple (through <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/27/apple-donations-hurricane-harvey-relief/" target="_blank">iTunes</a>), PayPal, and Facebook&mdash;allowed donations through their mobile payment services. Facebook announced it would “<a href="https://www.digitaltrends.com/social-media/facebook-hurricane-harvey-recovery-donations/" target="_blank">match every dollar donated, up to $1 million, to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s Hurricane Harvey Recovery Fund</a>.” And NBC News reported that one Facebook user even raised $20,000 for relief efforts through a Facebook Live stream.

<p>
	Social media was also used to help those displaced by Harvey, as <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/29/joel-osteen-memes-reactions-lakewood-houston/" target="_blank">Twitter users pressured televangelist Joel Osteen</a> to open up his megachurch as a shelter. <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/31/harvey-storm-tracker-dog-social-media-owner/" target="_blank">Twitter users also helped to reunite a dog and its owner</a> who were separated by the storm.

<p>
	While we had an up-close view of the destruction, we also had an up-close view of the definition of community&mdash;neighbors helping neighbors and strangers helping strangers. I hope that technology helps that to continue, even after the news cameras disappear.

The News Cycle
</h2>
<p>
	Leading up to Labor Day, the biggest companies in tech and retail were trying to get in the end-of-summer news cycle. Labor Day is not only the unofficial end of summer, but it is also a warning to retailers to get their holiday campaigns finalized. Believe it or not, the red and green tinsel takes over in just a matter of weeks! To add to that, many companies realize that the next two weeks belong to the Apple iPhone (and other product) rumors. For that reason, there were a lot of big announcements this week. We have them covered for you&mdash;the latest digital, business, social media, entertainment, and marketing news&mdash;in this week’s Britton Digital Update. Without showing favoritism for one brand over another, here are some of those announcements, in alphabetical order.</p>

Amazon<br>
</h2>
<p>
	This was an incredible week for Amazon, as it completed its Whole Foods purchase and immediately made an impact. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/24/16198736/amazon-completes-whole-foods-acquisition-lower-prices-avocados" target="_blank">Announcing price drops on thousands of items</a> was a brilliant move to change the perception that Whole Foods is expensive. The items it discounted were marked with Amazon tags showcasing the new ownership. In addition, Amazon Echo speakers were immediately sold in Whole Foods stores, and food products were immediately sold online.
</p>
<p>
	Amazon also announced an interesting collaboration this week with Microsoft that will pool together digital-assistant resources. Basically, Amazon devices like the Echo will also include integration with Microsoft’s Cortana assistant and Microsoft software (such as Windows), and devices will also include integration with Alexa. Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, said in <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2017/08/30/alexa-meets-cortana-microsoft-and-amazon-to-integrate-their-digital-assistants/" target="_blank">a statement</a>, “There are going to be multiple successful intelligent agents, each with access to different sets of data and with different specialized skill areas. Together, their strengths will complement each other and provide customers with a richer and even more helpful experience.“
</p>
<p>
	Cortana brings knowledge and integration of the Microsoft Office Suite, while Alexa brings immense entertainment and online-shopping abilities. We’ll also point out that Microsoft owns the Xbox gaming system and Amazon owns Twitch, a social-network and live-stream platform that is centered around gaming. Sounds like a “Prime” opportunity for additional collaboration.

Apple
</h2>
<p>
	We have an 8 date! <a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2017/08/28/wsj-apple-announce-iphone-8-september-12-event/#.tnw_4MXNVljp" target="_blank">The <em>Wall Street Journal</em> is reporting that September 12</a> is an official date that the next set of iPhones could be announced. Apple has yet to send out the official invitations, because it typically waits until it is sure there will be no delays. Based on rumors, you can expect a bezel-free screen, wireless charging, and the lack of a home button.
</p>
<p>
	Apple will give more details&mdash;in addition to the new hardware&mdash;about its upcoming release of iOS 11. When it announced the operating-system update at its most recent developers conference, it previewed ARKit, its augmented-reality platform for development. iOS 11 is expected to bring advanced augmented-reality capability to millions of phones, along with an entire new section of apps to the App Store.

<p>
	This week, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/29/a-preview-of-the-first-wave-of-ar-apps-coming-to-iphones/" target="_blank">a demo event</a> showcased some of the apps already developed with ARKit. Apps in the pipeline include an IKEA app that lets you virtually place furniture in your home to see how it fits with your décor, a Food Network app that lets you decorate a virtual cupcake and then sends you the recipe to create it in real life, an app for fans of <em>The Walking Dead</em> that lets you kill off virtual zombies, and a <em>Very Hungry Caterpillar</em> app that brings the popular children’s book to life. And that is only the beginning. It’s an exciting advancement in technology that will have a huge impact on apps and smartphone use.

Facebook
</h2>
<p>
	Fake news came into the spotlight as we were approaching the last US presidential election. Facebook took a lot of heat for not taking a bigger role in trying to stop the spread of fake news. Since then, it has been taking steps to reduce the impact of fake news. In a recent <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/news/2017/08/blocking-ads-from-pages-that-repeatedly-share-false-news/" target="_blank">statement</a>, the social media giant said, “At Facebook, we’re working to fight the spread of false news in three key areas: disrupting the economic incentives to create false news, building new products to curb the spread of false news, and helping people make more informed decisions when they encounter false news.” Facebook announced that it is taking additional steps to disrupt the economic incentives to create fake news by blocking ads from pages that repeatedly share fake news. One of my team members, Kara Hackett, digital storyteller, recently wrote about <a href="http://www.brittonmdg.com/the-britton-blog/fake-news-impact-on-advertising">the many meanings of fake news and its impact on advertising</a>.

<p>
	Another news story (that wasn’t fake) from Facebook this week was that its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, is a dad for the second time. Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced (in a <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/28/august-zuckerberg-born-letter-mark-priscilla/#EwBb0ZuelOqZ" target="_blank">Facebook post</a>, of course) the birth of their second daughter, August. In the Facebook post, they wrote to their daughter about the importance of childhood, reading Dr. Seuss books, and going outside to play. <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/28/august-zuckerberg-born-letter-mark-priscilla/#EwBb0ZuelOqZ"></a>

Fitbit
</h2>
<p>
	Fitbit doubled down on health this week as it announced the <a href="https://www.fitbit.com/ionic" target="_blank">Ionic</a>, its new smartwatch. Some are expecting it to compete with the Apple Watch&mdash;eventually. In addition to tracking steps and the typical heart and sleep monitoring, it also brings the functionality of third-party apps. It launches with just a few apps, including Pandora for music (sorry, Spotify fans!) and Starbucks for coffee (and mobile payments). It has been rumored over the past year that Fitbit will open its own app store, which could lead to significant revenue, much like it has for Apple. In a partnership with Adidas, there is also a sports-themed special-edition Ionic watch to come at a later date, similar to the Nike-edition Apple Watch. It also appears that Fitbit will release its own set of <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/08/28/fitbit-flyer-development/#pQ10bchFX5qd" target="_blank">wireless headphones</a> that will pair with the new smartwatch. We’ll see if Fitbit’s aggressive $299 price for the Ionic can sway some consumers away from Apple or Samsung.

Google
</h2>
<p>
	It should be no secret that we are moving to a mobile-first world. New research from BrightEdge supports that notion, saying that <a href="http://www.fierceretail.com/digital/google-searches-mobile-outpace-desktop" target="_blank">57 percent of all Google search traffic now happens on mobile</a>. Google has made efforts to force websites to create mobile-friendly versions for this very reason. BrightEdge said that 79 percent of Google searches were different across mobile and desktop, showcasing the importance of optimizing for both desktop and mobile. Another interesting note is that “Google shows different content across mobile and desktop 23 percent of [the] time among the top-ranking keywords.” Just because your content ranks near the top on desktop, does not mean it will rank the same on mobile
</p>
<p>
	Google is also trying to keep pace with Apple when it comes to augmented reality. While Apple has ARKit as its developer platform, this week <a href="https://youtu.be/ttdPqly4OF8" target="_blank">Google announced ARCore</a>. According to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/29/google-shows-off-arcore-its-answer-to-apples-arkit/?ncid=rss" target="_blank">TechCrunch</a>, “ARCore is launching on the Pixel and Galaxy S8 to start, but by its public launch Google plans to have 100 million Android devices supported for motion-tracked AR.” As mentioned above, Apple has previewed some of the apps coming soon for its iOS platform, but you can expect similar apps a little further down the road from Google. While there seems to be a race to be the first to bring AR to the mainstream now, it will be second nature to have those features on smartphone cameras in the future. Google knows that it’s not who gets there first, but who offers the best content.<br>

<p>
	Ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show next week, Google announced additional integrations coming for its digital assistant. In a <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/assistant/your-google-assistant-is-coming-to-new-speakers-and-more/" target="_blank">blog post</a>, Google said, “Starting later this year, with manufacturers like LG, you’ll be able control your appliances, including washers, dryers, vacuums, and more from your Assistant on your smart speaker, Android phone, or iPhone.” Last week, we told you about the rumor that Google is releasing a smaller version of Google Home to compete better with Amazon’s Echo Dot. Additional smart-home functionality could be a great incentive to purchase this device. In the future, we could say, “OK, Google, wash the dishes.”

Hyperloop (SpaceX/Tesla)
</h2>
<p>
	If you are not familiar with Hyperloop, it is a proposed mode of passenger and/or freight transportation in a sealed tube or system of tubes through which a pod may travel free of air resistance or friction at optimal speed and acceleration. It’s a collaboration between Elon Musk’s teams at Tesla and SpaceX. This past week, a number of student and nonstudent teams participated in a <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/27/hyperloop-pod-competition-winner-hits-200-mph/" target="_blank">Hyperloop Pod competition</a> to see who could build a pod that would travel the fastest. A team from Germany won the competition, creating a pod that hit 200 miles per hour on a track just over three-quarters of a mile long. The <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/902039243601485824/video/1" target="_blank">video of the winning run</a>, posted to Musk’s Twitter account, is pretty cool to watch. Musk, the CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla, believes there is no reason that teams can’t reach 500 to 600 miles per hour in future pod competitions.

YouTube
</h2>
<p>
	YouTube did something this week that it hasn’t done in 12 years: <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/29/16217430/youtube-mobile-app-desktop-new-logo-updates-changes" target="_blank">change its logo</a>. This is minor to most people, but it’s a major move in the marketing world that puts less emphasis on the “Tube” and more emphasis on its play button. It has also, like Facebook, simplified its aesthetic to remove more red and replace it with more white space. In addition, the mobile app will be able to display vertical video without those black bars that are ever so annoying.

<p>
	Also this week, one of YouTube’s biggest artists, Taylor Swift, dropped her new video. It instantly set records. The video for “Look What You Made Me Do” had <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/29/16220652/taylor-swift-look-what-you-made-me-do-youtube-record" target="_blank">the largest first 24 hours of any video in YouTube history</a>. In its first day, it was streamed 43.2 million times! We’ll save you the math: That’s nearly 33,000 views per minute. She also broke the one-day record for streams on Spotify, according to the Verge. It does not appear that T-Swift’s success is slowing any time soon.
