Sedimentary proxy records from atoll lagoons and marine sediments

Co-PI Sam Bentley will develop a paleohurricane proxy record from atoll lagoon and marine sediments in Belize by the identification of oceanic event layers. Three areas are chosen for the study:

  • A west-east transect from near the mouth of Mullins River to Southern Long Cay
  • The Blue Hole of Lighthouse Reef
  • Another W-E transect from the mouth of Monkey River to Zapotilla Cays.

Hurricane event layers in these settings are likely to be characterized by discrete beds with sharp bases and upward-fining grain size. Vibra-cores and/or piston cores will be collected at these locations in order to document the marine record of hurricanes along the central and southern Belize margin.
